Garage-Style Car
Identification
The Original Little People Garage-Style cars were made several years prior to the production of the ever popular #930 Play Family Action Garage. These cars were originally introduced in 1963 in the #932 Amusement Park. The cars used in the #932 Amusement Park have 2 metal rivets on the bottom, are marked "fp" and "Fisher-Price Toys" on the trunk lid, have no gas hole, and roll on small 3/4" diameter wheels that are marked "Fisher-Price Toys Made in USA", click here for an illustration. These cars were available in 4 colors: blue, olive green (exclusive to the Amusement Park), red, and yellow. These cars always had a white base and white plastic axles. The Amusement Park was discontinued in 1965 and the Garage-Style cars seemed to had gone into retirement.
In 1968, Fisher-Price found a new use for the Garage-Style cars. A C-hook was added to the back of the car allowing the car to pull a small trailor sold in the #685 Car And Boat Set and #686 Car And Camper Set. In addition to adding a C-hook, the wheels were changed to slightly larger 7/8" diameter wheels that were marked "Fisher-Price Toys", click here for an illustration of the wheels. Some of these cars had 2 metal rivets on the bottom, but the rivets were later omitted and never used again. The cars used in 1968 and 1969 were available in 2 colors: blue and red. This is the first time that the cars were available with a colors top and white base, or a white base and colored top.
1970's #930 Play Family Action Garage is the long-running set that gave these cars their name - the Garage-Style cars. The previous mold used for these cars was slightly changed for the #930 Garage set. A gas hole was added to the back corner, the Fisher-Price marking was moved to the hood lid (opposed to the trunk lid), and the wheels were held on via metal rivets opposed to plastic. The cars were available in 4 colors: blue, green (NOT olive green), red, and yellow. They were available with a colored top and white base or white top and colored base. The older cars have wheels marked "Fisher-Price Toys", but the marking were omitted at the end of the 1970's.
